Halliwick Concept

The Halliwick Concept is a way of teaching anyone to swim. It was developed in the UK in 1949 specifically for teaching disabled people to swim and is now used in many countries in the world both for teaching swimming and for therapy. For more details about the Halliwick Concept see the paragraph below. The Halliwick Association of Swimming Therapy (Halliwick AST) is the UK association that promotes Halliwick and organises courses both in the UK and internationally and has developed numerous Publications and DVDs about Halliwick.

‘The Halliwick Concept 2010’ is a paper written by the Education and Research Committee of the International Halliwick Association (IHA). This paper has sections on the philosophy of Halliwick; an explanation (with diagrams) of the Ten Point Programme, (‘the structured learning process through which a person with no experience in water can progress towards independence in the water.’); an explanation of how Halliwick can be used for Therapy (with reference to the World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) – WHO 2001; and a link to the History of Halliwick.
This paper is now supported by video clips.

News from Halliwick – Brazil of an award for their work

We have just heard good news from a very good friend of Halliwick AST, Mauricio Koprowski Garcia – Chair of Halliwick Brazil.

He tells us that  their association has been given an important reward by  the São Paulo State Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, recognizing the excellence of the Halliwick Concept for the inclusion and egalitarian access to the disabled person.

As Halliwick AST National Chairperson, I was invited to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Sport and Recreation Alliance (formerly CCPR) held at St James’s Palace on 20th July, 2011.  The photo taken by the official photographer shows (from L to R), the Earl of Wessex, Ann Thomson one of our International Halliwick  Lecturers, myself  and the Earl’s Aide.  The Earl who is SARA President, is holding a copy of the latest edition of our text book, ‘Halliwick Swimming for Disabled People’ which I presented to him.

Article about ‘Halliwick and Therapy’

The Halliwick Concept is an approach known worldwide which enables people to enjoy water based activities and to learn to swim. In some cases it is used for therapy.
Since its inception in 1949 by James McMillan (Mac), different aspects of the Concept have been further developed. For instance we have seen the development of games and activities to enhance and consolidate learning, an increased understanding of how to teach swimming strokes to persons with limited mobility and specific use of Halliwick for therapeutic purposes.

This article will address more specifically the use of Halliwick when working with clients with cerebral palsy (CP) or similar conditions. (See CP definition at end of this article).
