<p>The Halliwick Concept is a way of teaching anyone to swim. It was developed in the UK in 1949 specifically for teaching disabled people to swim and is now used in many countries in the world both for teaching swimming and for therapy. For more details about the Halliwick Concept see the paragraph below. The Halliwick Association of Swimming Therapy (Halliwick AST) is the UK association that promotes Halliwick and <strong><a href="http://www.halliwick.org.uk/courses-training/uk-course-dates-organisers-2011/">organises courses </a></strong>both in the UK and internationally and has developed numerous <strong><a href="http://www.halliwick.org.uk/publications/">Publications and DVDs </a></strong>about Halliwick.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.halliwick.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/8-Halliwick-Concept-for-IHA-website-27-Jan2012.pdf" target="_blank"><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>‘The Halliwick Concept 2010’ </strong></span></a>is a paper written by the Education and Research Committee of the International Halliwick Association (IHA). This paper has sections on the <strong>philosophy </strong><strong>of Halliwick</strong>; an explanation (with diagrams) of the <strong>Ten Point Programme</strong>, (‘the structured learning process through which a person with no experience in water can progress towards independence in the water.’); an explanation of how Halliwick can be used for <strong>Therapy</strong> (with reference to the World Health Organisation’s International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) – WHO 2001; and a link to <a href="http://www.halliwick.org.uk/publications-2/the-halliwick-story/"><strong>the History </strong><strong>of Halliwick.</strong></a> <br />

<p>Under ‘<strong>Dates for your Diary’ on page 2</strong>, there are more detail of the Conference to be held over the weekend of 12th &#8211; 14th October entitled ‘Swimming for People with Disabilities’ organised by the National C-ordination Committee (NCC) the full programme of which, with Booking Forms, will appear on our  website  shortly.</p>
<p><strong>On page 3</strong> is an article from Conquest SC and one from Joan Martin on her recent visits to 2 Royal Residences.  She also wants to inform you that M&amp;S are installing Fitting Rooms for the disabled in their stores and that new London Underground maps are now available showing updated Disabled access to stations for wheelchair users.      </p>

<p>As Halliwick AST National Chairperson, I was invited to attend the <strong>Annual General Meeting of the Sport and Recreation Alliance </strong>(formerly CCPR) held at <strong>St James&#8217;s Palace </strong>on 20th July, 2011.  The photo taken by the official photographer shows (from L to R), the <strong>Earl of Wessex</strong>, Ann Thomson one of our International Halliwick  Lecturers, myself  and the Earl&#8217;s Aide.  The Earl who is SARA President, is holding a copy of the latest edition of our text book, <strong>&#8216;Halliwick Swimming for Disabled People&#8217; </strong>which I presented to him.</p>
