Why no Goggles?
*

People often ask why Halliwick AST asks swimmers not to wear goggles. Why?

  • It is felt that it is important that swimmers are happy in the water and this includes being able to go under the water without the need for goggles.

  • To be able to keep your eyes open under water without goggles is a useful safety skill. If a swimmer is not used to swimming without goggles they might panic if the goggles broke or slipped off or if they fell into water without them on.

  • There is a risk of damage to the eyes if goggles are not put on carefully or if someone is irresponsible and pulls at them.

At first the water might sting, but if you come swimming regularly your eyes become accustomed to the water and you won’t notice it. As long as the water is clear you can see under water, enabling you to try new activities in the pool.

Are there exceptions? Yes, if:

  • A swimmer has an eye condition which makes it necessary to use goggles when swimming.

  • A swimmer is involved in competition and swimming a lot of lengths.

If a swimmer does have to wear goggles they must be aware of the safety factors.
